MEDIA DAY: CAPTURE THE HYPE

Media Day: The Biggest Moment of the Year

Shoulders back, chin up, smile.

Could that phrase be any more dated?

The evolution of Media Day across professional and collegiate sports is fascinating. In the 1970s, 80s and 90s, athletic departments used media day to capture headshots for paper programs and media guides typically distributed at stadium and arena entrances, as fans flooded in to watch their favorite team.

Fast forward to the early 2000s and the internet had pushed sports into a digital media focus. Suddenly leaders were building a more robust online presence, aware that they needed content not only for each team but their department directories, donation pages, schedules and everything in between.

With facility improvements and upgrades, all eyes were on the JUMBOTRON across pregame, halftime, and post-game experiences. Athletic departments needed content, so they’d assemble a few featured athletes by program and capture moments behind the scenes.

This was truly the start of short-form content activations in college sports.

Think of where we are now. Social media is the center of the sports digital universe. Like it or not, it’s where everyone engages and stays close to the action — fans are always looking on Instagram, TikTok, X and yes, Facebook, for the latest on their favorite teams. For athletic departments, it’s where communities, alumni, donors, recruits, student-athletes, and spectators thrive. An elevated social media presence is the most important first impression a department can make to its stakeholders.

Engagement, likes, shares, and mentions skyrocket on their accounts, which leads to additional engagement and impressions for the athletic department and its digital footprint. Talk about a win-win.

Athletes “show off” their allegiance to the name across their jerseys on media day more than any other day of the year. You can help them while helping yourselves.
